What is Vaginal Dryness?

Vaginal dryness occurs when the tissues in the vagina are dry, thin, and not well-moisturized.

This can lead to discomfort, especially during sex. It can occur at any age, though it is most common in women during or after menopause when there is a decrease in estrogen levels (estrogen keeps the vaginal lining moisturized and healthy).

What are the causes of Vaginal Dryness?

  • A decline in estrogen levels
  • Breastfeeding and childbirth
  • Hormonal birth control
  • Cancer treatments, including chemotherapy
  • Diabetes
  • Medications such as certain antidepressants and antihistamines
  • Sjogren’s Syndrome (This is an autoimmune disorder that may cause dryness all over the body) Not being sexually aroused
  • Using scented soap sprays around or in the vagina
  • Depression
  • Excessive stress
  • Surgical removal of the ovaries

What are the signs of Vaginal Dryness?

  • Discomfort in the vaginal and pelvic regions
  • Burning sensation in the vagina
  • Loss of interest in sex
  • Pain during sexual intercourse
  • Light bleeding following intercourse
  • Soreness
  • Recurring urinary tract infections
  • Vaginal itching

Treatment

Vaginal dryness is rarely a sign of a serious medical condition. But seek a medical consultant if you experience discomfort during sexual intercourse or notice sores, cracking, or bleeding in the vaginal areas.
