Tight Vagina

The tightness of the vagina can make penetrative sex painful. However, the condition is treatable. The pain that happens before or during penetration is termed vaginismus. It does not necessarily happen only during sexual intercourse. One could experience it even while inserting a tampon or during a pelvic exam.

Causes of a tight vagina

  • Sexually transmitted diseases or yeast infections
  • Injuries to the area because of physical trauma, sexual abuse, or childbirth
  • Dyspareunia, a medical condition that tends to cause pain during penetrative sex
  • Fluctuations in estrogen levels, especially during breastfeeding
  • Vaginismus or involuntary muscle spasms when something is inserted into the vagina
  • Medications
  • Vaginal atrophy
  • Mood changes
  • Weight gain
  • Medical treatments such as radiation for cancer

Myths about a loose vagina

By nature, the vagina is elastic. It is simply not possible to have a loose vagina. The vagina, though, can become slightly loose with age or childbirth but does not lose its elasticity.

Causes for a vagina to lose its elasticity

Two things can affect vaginal elasticity: age and childbirth. These tend to weaken the vaginal muscles. It is a myth that frequent sex causes the loosening of the vagina over time.
