Maternal Mental Health

Expecting mothers face changes to their bodies, hormones, and lifestyles.

The World Health Organization defines maternal health as “the health of women during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postnatal period”. It encompasses physical, mental, emotional, and social health.

Unfortunately, maternal and mental health is overlooked in the broader public health discourse. "Maternal mental health is a public health problem in India", says a study adding that "it is estimated 10–35% of women worldwide, including in India, suffer from depression during pregnancy". It became more intense after the onset of Covid-19, resulting in job losses and social isolation. Depression is the most common maternal mental health disorder, followed by anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder, and postpartum psychosis.

Here are some types of maternal health problems

  • Post-Partum Anxiety: Symptoms include excessive worry, fear, inability to concentrate, and insomnia.
  • Post-Partum Obsessive Compulsive Disorder: Agitation and obsessive worry about cleanliness are some signs.
  • Post-Partum Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder: Exhibited as nightmares related to the process of giving birth.

You are not alone

If you are depressed or anxious, reach out to family or friends. However, if you feel it is severe, seek professional help.
