What is Malnutrition?
Malnutrition is essentially a lack of proper nutrition. It could be caused by not having enough to eat or not Eating enough of the right things. It could also be because the body is unable to use food eaten.
In short, it refers to deficiencies, excesses, or imbalances in the intake of nutrients.
What are the symptoms of Malnutrition?
Signs that you are malnourished could be mood changes, rashes on the body, fatigue, falling ill often and taking a long time to recover, wounds taking longer to heal, reduced concentration, thinning hair, joint pain, soft bones, bleeding gums, and increased sensitivity to light.
Who is considered Malnourished?
- You could be considered malnourished if:
- You unintentionally lose between 5% to 10% of your body weight within three or four months
- Your body mass index is less than 18.5
- You notice that your clothes seem to have become loose for no reason
What is the treatment for Malnutrition?
Doctors usually suggest a healthier, more balanced diet of "fortified" foods that contain extra nutrients.
In some cases, supplements are recommended. Those who cannot or will not eat or whose bodies are unable to absorb nutrients may be fed intravenously.
