What is IUI?
Intrauterine insemination or IUI is a procedure used to treat infertility. In this type of artificial insemination, the concentrated sperm is placed directly into the uterus when the ovary releases eggs to be fertilized.
When should you consider IUI?
- Donor sperm: IUI is considered for women who need to use donor sperm to get pregnant.
- Endometriosis-related infertility: If the infertility is related to endometriosis, IUI is often the first treatment along with certain medications.
- Unexplained infertility: When there is no identifiable cause for infertility, IUI is often the first treatment.
- Mild male factor infertility: If the partners semen analysis shows below-average sperm concentration, abnormalities in sperm size and shape, or weak sperm movement, IUI is considered.
- Cervical factor infertility: In some women, the cervix may prevent the sperm from reaching the egg. IUI is considered because it bypasses the cervix and deposits the sperm directly into the uterus thus increasing the chances of a successful pregnancy.
- Ovulatory factor infertility: Problems with ovulation lead to infertility for some women. IUI is considered In this case as well.

- It is more cost-effective as compared to in-vitro fertilization.
- It is quick because the procedure takes only 15-20 minutes.
- It does not require anesthesia.
- It is also not too painful.
