Egg Freezing
Did you know that former Miss World Diana Hayden got her eggs frozen and gave birth twice? She said it gave her the freedom to choose when to become a mother.
What is egg freezing?
Egg freezing, medically known as oocyte cryopreservation, is a process in which a woman's eggs are extracted, frozen, and preserved so they can delay their pregnancy until they are ready.
When should you consider it?
- Advancing age: The quality of eggs is best in your twenties. So, if you are not planning to have a baby, then you can consider freezing your eggs.
- Your health: If you are facing a health crisis that could damage your eggs or your ability to get pregnant (chemotherapy, for instance), harvest and freeze eggs.
- Your relationship status: Haven’t met the right person yet? Freezing your eggs will give you time.
What are the benefits?
- Several women feel what is known as “fertility anxiety”, which is that their fertility is declining. Egg freezing takes some of that away.
- Egg freezing can protect your eggs from disease or preserve them before invasive medical treatments, especially if you are diagnosed with cancer or endometriosis, where medicines affect the reproductive system.
