Dark Spots
What are Dark Spots?
I am in my 40s and have often worried about the dark patches on my skin. But I realized I didn't have to worry. These are common and are known as dark spots and appear if you are exposed to too much sunlight for a longer period of time (years).
Dark spots are merely hyperpigmentation on the skin, caused when the skin produces too much of its pigment melanin. I consulted a doctor for it but was told they are harmless but can be cancerous in some rare cases. So, do consult a doctor for dark spots that worry you.
What do Dark Spots Look Like?
They are usually flat and round and can be light, dark brown, or black. They typically appear on body parts that receive the most sun exposure, like your face, shoulders, or arms.
Causes of Dark Spots

- Sunscreen and other sun-protective measures are not being used frequently or adequately enough
- Pregnancy mask, Riehl's melanosis (dermatitis), or other similar skin conditions.
- Medications (especially those for the heart)
- Liver disease
