Acne

Our skin produces an oily substance called sebum that lubricates and protects the skin. Acne is a skin condition that occurs when excess sebum and dead skin cells block the hair follicles. Although it affects people of all ages, acne is more common among teenagers. Acne can appear on the face, back, chest, and shoulders.

Causes of Acne

  • Excess oil (sebum) production
  • Clogged hair follicles
  • Bacteria
  • Inflammation
  • Age (most common in teenagers)
  • Hormonal changes during puberty or pregnancy
  • Family history of acne
  • Pressure on your skin from helmets, backpacks, and mobile phones
  • Hormonal changes
  • Certain medications like corticosteroids
  • Stress does not cause acne but can worsen it

Symptoms of Acne

Acne commonly shows up as:

  • Whiteheads
  • Blackheads
  • Red bumps, known as papules
  • Nodules under the skin
  • Cystic lesions, usually pus-filled

Sometimes, acne can cause scarring even after it has healed. For some, the skin will appear lighter (hypopigmented) or darker (hyperpigmented).
